National Indigenous Forestry Strategy

NIFS is about building partnerships between Indigenous communities, business and governments

On 19 September 2005, the Australian Government announced funding would be provided to the National Association of Forest Industries (NAFI) to engage a National Indigenous Employment Forestry Liaison Officer.

The National Indigenous Forestry Employment Liaison officer commenced with NAFI in October 2005 and has been working in three pilot locations – south west Victoria , the far south coast of NSW (including Gippsland into north east Victoria ) and Tasmania .

The role of the National Indigenous Forestry Employment Liaison officer is to coordinate careers information, advice and support to Indigenous communities - particularly jobseekers, Job network members, other employment service providers and the Australian Government, to develop new strategies to boost educational and training options for Indigenous Australians in the forest and timber industry. The coordinator is also working with NAFI members to help implement recruitment and staff management practices to improve employment outcomes for Indigenous people in the forestry and forest products sector.
