Impacts of Native Vegetation and Biodiversity Regulations

To deliver both biodiversity conservation and the most effective utilisation of Australia’s native vegetation, it is essential that industry and landowners be provided with a clear and consistent legislative framework.

It is therefore essential that the interpretation, regulation and implementation of Commonwealth and State legislation is consistent with the stated objectives of the Acts.

Regulatory regimes should recognise the forest and timber industry’s commitment to sustainability, rather than having Government agencies continually attempting to redefine sustainability for each new piece of environmental legislation.

With a more appropriate application of the existing regulatory framework, business confidence would be improved with reduced financier risks being reflected in new investment and employment opportunities for the communities of rural Australia.

The uncertainty over possible future changes to legislation that may restrict landuse activities is generating a lack of willingness for landowners to report on the area of native vegetation which they either clear or use on a sustainable basis for production purposes.

This is a clear perverse outcome of the existing regulatory arrangements.
