Media ReleasesHistoric transport initiative welcomed by forest industry07 Jun 2004 NAFI Executive Director Kate Carnell said today that the Australian Government’s Auslink package of funding for transport would mean a big boost to the nation’s forest industries and regional communities. “Improving the road and rail systems in regional areas is vital for public safety and economic efficiency. “This initiative should be very welcome to many forestry-based communities. Mrs Carnell said that over the next 5-10 years at least $600 million was needed to improve transport links to ensure efficient and productive timber product distribution. She said that as large areas of plantations planted in recent decades reached maturity, funding was needed to ensure efficient transport to sawmills and ports. “The $4 billion in the extended Roads to Recovery program and the grants to local councils will help fund many improvements for forest products transport. “Safe and efficient transport initiatives are vital to keep these local economies productive and competitive and therefore keep local communities viable. “Of course, improved local roads are safer for all motorists.” Environment would also benefit Mrs Carnell also said that improved transport infrastructure would be good for the environment. “Modernised infrastructure has been estimated to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%,” she said. “The viability of regional area plantations is also an essential factor in maintaining biodiversity, controlling salinity and absorbing greenhouse gases.” “Ensuring that Australia’s timber demand can be met from Australian sources also keeps down imports from developing countries, which means we are getting those products from more sustainably managed forests.” |
