Forest Tourism: Tasmania’s Tahune Centre drawing large numbers

The Tahune Forest AirWalk and Visitor Centre in SW Tasmania has welcomed its 250,000th visitor.

AirWalk manager, Ben Abey, said the 250,000th visitor arrived about 10.30 am on 28 February and was presented with a prize package, including a commemorative huon pine bowl, by Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier, Lara Giddings.

"There is no doubt that it is a remarkable achievement to have received a quarter of a million visitors just 20 months after opening," said Ms Giddings.

"The AirWalk has become a "must-see" for visitors to Tasmania and this highlights how well forestry and tourism can work together."

Mr Abey said the AirWalk was now recognised as one of the state’s premier tourism attractions.

"The level of visitation puts the AirWalk among the top three stand alone tourist sites in Tasmania, alongside well established attractions such as Port Arthur, and Cadbury’s Chocolate factory," he said.

Mr Abey said the Tahune Forest AirWalk and Visitor Centre had also been recognised by industry for its excellence, receiving numerous awards for its design and construction.

"The AirWalk’s popularity underscores its naming as ‘Best New Tourism Development’ at the 2002 Tasmanian Tourism Awards."

In 2002 the Tahune Forest AirWalk and Visitor Centre was accredited by the Nature and Ecotourism Accreditation Program (NEAP) and became the first visitor centre in the world to be certified by the international sustainable tourism program, Green Globe.

The higher than expected number of visitors resulted in the opening of the $650,000 extensions to the Visitor Centre and the Blue Stone Shelter early this month.

Mr Abey paid tribute to the Huon Valley Council, the State Government and the local community who have been strong supporters of the AirWalk from its inception.
