Gidday! We're Harry and Sal.

That's Hardwood Harry and Softwood Sal for those of you out there in timberland who hadn't quite twigged! We reckon there must be millions of people around the globe who like us love forests and wood products, who work with timber and support sustainable timber industries.

Note that Harry & Sal are taking a long holiday and won't be answering any more questions after close of business on Friday, 31st March, 2006. The question and answer section of the website will be closed from that date. Wood users within Australia are advised to contact their State timber advisory service for information. To find your local timber advisory service, go to the National Timber Development Program's website at www.timber.org.au, select 'About Us', and then click on the words 'Timber advisory service'. Overseas inquirers will need to contact an industry organisation in their own country.

While you're here, why don't you have a look at our Timber Tips and Projects?

PS. There are hundreds of questions and answers already posted on Timber Talk. If you're looking for information on a particular topic use our handy search engine (to the left).

G'day Chris! Thanks for your message about harvesting, reforestation and site treatment. I think your best source of information is going to be the TINDER Web Site (Timber Information Network: Development, Education & Research. The URL contact number is http://www.chem.csiro.au/timber.htm. You can make personal contact with Greg Foliente via e-mail on greg.foliente@dbce.csiro.au or Alastair Woodard on woodard@ozemail.com.au. Another possible source of information is Primary Industries South Australia's Web site at http://www.pi.sa.gov.au. I hope these contact are some help. If you can't get the info you need, let me know and I'll see if I can dig deeper for you.

G'Day eh!!

I am from Alberta Canada and am in the Woodlands department of
a sawmill. I am responsible for the harvest of 130,000 cubic
meters of timber a year. I was wondering if you could give
me some addresses (email) of some of the timber companies Down
Under. I would be interested in talking about harvesting,
reforestation, site treatments ect. Any information would
be appreciated.

Thankyou very much

Bill, thanks for your message about plans for a cubby house for your two daughters. It was a reminder that Sal and I have to get busy and put the playhouse online in our Timber Tips. In the meantime, if the kids just can't wait, send a stamped self-addressed envelope to the Timber Development Association, 113 Anzac Highway, Ashford, S.A. 5035 and they will post you some plans by snail mail.

FREE demo cd-rom wood encyclopedia
Hello. Until very recently I was the primary builder and production manager for Stuart Spector Design, an internationally known guitar company. I made electric bass guitars [curly maple] for some of the biggest rock bands in the world. Before that I was a high-end custom hard wood furniture maker. Now I am promoting a CD-ROM software program called Woods of the World which is designed to help people in the "Wood Sector" search, compare and substitute over 900 species of wood from around the world. There are more than 3,000 pages of text including extensive lists of mechanical and physical properties, 3,500 maps, video, environmental profiles, color pictures of each wood, sources and much more. It has been very favorably reviewed by every major woodworking magazine, and as FineWoodworking put it in April of '96, "Woods of the World just might make the computer your next piece of shop equipment". I sincerely believe that Woods of the World will be an important asset for your woodworking efforts as well. Programs priced from $9.95 to $139 [for the full version with an Internet Directory & bookmark with over 2,000 wood-related sites]. E-mail me if you would like a FREE demo of the program and please include your snail mail address . Thank you for your time. Don

Nice to hear from you again Sita! The statistics we normally use come from a quarterly report published by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural & Resource Economics (ABARE). The report is called "Australian Forestry Statistics" and can be obtained from ABARE, phone (02) 6272 2000. ABARE is also on the Internet at http://www.abare.gov.au. Regarding technical information about meranti, send your address or fax number by e-mail and I'll send a CSIRO data sheet. Hope this helps with your thesis.

Thank you for your help previously with information on Paulownia for my thesis. I am wondering where I can get statistics about the types of timbers imported into Australia, and also some detailed information about meranti.

Hi Alan & Jenny! Regarding a light-coloured timber for the floors in your new home, different timbers are available in different parts of the country and it's generally best to talk to your local timber association. They will be able to tell you what the local merchants have in stock. In your case the organisation to contact is the Timber Research & Development Advisory Council of Queensland (TRADAC). Their technical service can be contacted on (07) 3852 1344. TRADAC is currently at 5 Dunlop Street, Newstead, but shortly to move to 500 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley. Suitable timbers would include Victorian ash and ramin, but you will need to (a) find out if they are locally available and (b) see a sample to make sure you are happy with the colour.

G'day,

My wife Jenny and I are in house-building mode, (with an architect and builder, not as owner-builders). Jenny is keen to get as light coloured a timber on the floor as possible. Obviously it needs to be pretty durable to be on the floor. Any suggestions? (We are building in Brisbane).

Hello Vivienne, and thank you for your note about the "Bushmill" portable bandsaw. I guess Alisa, who left a message the other day might be interested to hear about it. Regarding advertising on the Internet, you might have a look at the Australian Wood Artisans Promotions page at http://www.woodart.com.au. If that's the kind of thing you're looking for, send Ainslie Pyne an e-mail on woodart@woodart.com.au. This might also be a good place to promote your Cupressus macrocarpa, as a lot of craft people look at the Wood Artisans' page.

We are milling a lot of Cypress Macrocarpa, but are finding that people know little about it and also that they constantly confuse it with Cypress Pine. Currently it is being used for specialist furniture and outdoor timbers but it appears there is little known about it other uses..Can you help.
One more thing..we make the only portable bandsaw in Australia and with the clsoing down of forests all over are finding them hard to sell unless we run around all over Australia, do you know where the best place would be on the internet to advertise this kind of product. We have Four models of portable bandsaw up to 52" (1300mm) wide cut and two models of swivel circular saw that can run in tandem.. All are safe, strong and one man operated. Will look forward to any impute you may be able to give. Vivienne. Laidlaw Laidlaw Ind. (manufacturers of "Bushmill" and other items.

Hi Alisa! Sounds as if you've found a nice spot to build. Spotted gum makes an excellent construction timber and it's quite practical for you to mill your own timber if you have the equipment, or if you can get the logs to a sawmill. It doesn't have to be dried if you are only using it in structural members, as long as you make some allowance for shrinkage. Of course, if you want to use it for joinery it must be dried first. The durability of spotted gum outdoors varies a bit, depending where it comes from. However, generally it stands up to the weather well. One tip ~ avoid the sapwood (lighter coloured, outer wood) as it is subject to Lyctus borer attack. If you would like more info about air drying, send a stamped self-addressed envelope to the Timber Development Association of S.A., 113 Anzac Highway, Ashford 5035.

Hi there. My husband and I have just bought a small property
of 7.5 acres. The housesite is populated by very large
spotted gums. We have read that the spotted gum makes a good
construction timber and would like to use the trees we have
to clear, in the construction of our home. What we would
like is some advice on how the timber should be treated
in order for it to be at it's best. Does it need to be air
dried, can it be left exposed to weather, how long does it
need to be left before use and so on. If you can direct me
to a internet site or a book which might be helpful, I would
be most grateful. Thanks for your help. Cheers! Alisa

Hi Cindy! Thanks for your note about Melaleuca. It's more commonly known as tea-tree, a medium-sized harwood which grows in coastal areas of New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory. It's not of much use a sawmill timber because of its numerous branches. However, the leaves and twigs contain a special oil which is used in soaps and perfumes. Tea-tree is also popular in some parts of Australia as a fencing material. Get back to Hardwood Harry if you need more detailed information.

To Matthew & Tammy ~ In answer to your NINE messages about the ecosystem of a rainforest, HARDWOOD HARRY AND SOFTWOOD SAL DON'T WORK ALL NIGHT YOU KNOW! If you're going to leave a message at night you might have to wait till the next day to get an answer! Hardwood Harry suggests you have a look at the Malaysian Timber Council's Internet pages on http://www.mtc.com.my because there's a lot of good information there. You could also try the European Tropical Forestry Research Network on http://www.zadi.de/etfm/etfmhom.htm to see what they've got. Hope this is not too late for your project. Hi Luke. You asked whether NSW mills were being forced to value add their products. There's clearly going to be a move towards softwood framing in the long term, and it makes sense for hardwood producers to value add, in order to open up new and different markets for their products. In Victoria, this process has been going on for some time, and since 1987, 118 kilns have been installed, increasing the output of kiln-dried timber from 10% in 1988 to 40% today. Of course, there have to be markets for the lower grade material and again the Victorians have addressed this by promoting their "Natural Feature Grade" material to furniture makers. The Timber Promotion Council (TPC) can provide more information about this if you phone (03) 9662 3222. To answer your specific query about mills losing their licences if they don't value add, I suggest you take it up with Ron Wilson who is in charge of the Marketing Division of State Forests of NSW, phone (02) 9980 4100. Hope this helps you to get to the bottom of it!

Hello to Tom Gower! I can certainly help you with information about Australian timbers, but if you are looking for info about New Zealand timbers you might do better to contact a local organisation. A good starting point would be NZ Forest Research Institute, Private Bag 3020, Rotorua. If it's Australian timbers you're interested in, send an email to Hardwood Harry and I'll arrange for some brochures to be posted.

I'd like to get hold of some basic timber information like common timber names, properties and size for school.

Can someone tell me the reasoning behind NSW (maybe all states) hardwood mills being forced to value add their product. From what I am told if they don't comply their liscence will not be renewed.
Thanks.

To the anonymous inquirer about Far East timber prices, the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) publishes a fortnightly report called "Tropical Timber Market Information". It concentrates on the near eastern countries, but includes details from Europe and the US. The issue for 1-15 July contained a special report on market prices in China. ITTO's e-mail is mjadams@itto.or.jp or you can e-mail me if you want a copy of this report.

To Jackie Heilbronn ~ For information on forest types in Queensland, contact either the Timber Research & Development Advisory Council (TRADAC) on (07) 3852 1344, or the Queensland Timber Board. TRADAC's advisory service should be able to give you the name of a person to speak to at the Queensland Timber Board if they can't help you themselves. If you just want general information about forests, send me an email, but it sounds as if your project is only about Queensland. Hope you get really good marks!

To Sita Vasanthakumar ~ Sorry the Paulownia contacts were not very helpful. I think perhaps they are more involved in growing the timber and as yet they probably don't have any data on the properties of the wood. We only have limited information and can't say yet what the structural potential of the timber is likely to be. We understand that in Asia it is more commonly used as a joinery and furniture timber, rather than a structural timber. However, it may also have structural potential. If you would like to phone our Timber Information Line on 1900 28 2000 we can discuss this with you, or leave your fax number at our E-mail address so we can send you some info.

Hi Danny Nouh ~ Regarding your final year thesis on timber engineering, your local timber organisation should be able to help. In your State it's the TDA of NSW, P.O. Box 50, Surry Hills 2010. Phone Andrew Dunn, Manager of Timber Engineering Services on 9360 3088. Andrew has also been working with the Sydney 2000 Olympics committee and can fill you in on the potential use of timber for Games structures. I will also post you some material today.

I am currently researching Paulownia, and am looking for some technical data on Paulownia. I would mostly like information on where Paulownia can be used as a building material, and to what extent. eg. can it be used as structural framing? If anybody has any information or references for this topic, it would be much appreciated. Peter Llewellyn, thankyou for the contact, although I rang them, and they were not very helpful at all.

Hi, I am a Civil Engineering Student from UNSW working on my final year thesis titled
"The Callenges of Timber Engineering in Australia". I was wondering if you have any suggestions
or any information with regards to the future use of Timber in Australia. Possible topics include:
New materials, Durability and Preservative treatments, Forests, Timber Acceptance as a structurally
viable material, Sydney 2000 games (timber engineering use), Risk Management and Quality Control.
I would appreciate any help as soon as possible. My Mailing address is 162 Liverpool Road, Enfield, NSW.
Thankyou for your time.

Hello to David Howe! A while back you asked about equipment and processes to creosote fence posts for your farm. Way back in 1972, the NSW Forestry Commission's Wood Technology Division prepared a leaflet called "Preservation of Natural Round Fence Posts". State Forests of New South Wales may still have copies, or they might have something newer. If not, you're most welcome to send a stamped self-addressed envelope to TDA of SA at 113 Anzac Highway, Ashford, S.A. 5035 and we'll post you a copy.

Kind regards,

Hi Dave! You were asking about growing eucalypts. A recent CSIRO report titled "Trees for south-eastern Australia" might be useful. It is mentioned in the Forestry & Forest Products newsletter "On Wood" (Winter 1996 issue) and can be obtained from the Rural Industries Research & Development Corporation, 14 Brisbane Avenue, Barton, ACT 2600, phone (06) 272 4539. You can also contact Tim Vercoe, one of the authors of the report, on email tim.vercoe@cbr.for.csiro.au.

To Scott Dennis: I'm not sure what you're looking for in relation to overseas ventures, but it sounds as if you would like to contact someone with interests in Russia. Maybe Russian Timber Imports Pty. Ltd. would be worth contacting. Don't think they have an E-mail address, but you could write to Peter Drew at Alfred Street, Alberton, South Australia 5014, Australia. The phone number is 8240 1100. If you are phoning from outside Australia, put 618 in front of the number.

Hi John Herman! Your question was about Glochinia Fernandi. I think it is actually GLOCHIDION FERDINANDI, common name "buttonwood". I don't have any info about the qualities of the timber, but if you quote the correct botanical name, someone at Queensland Forest Service might be able to help, as it looks as if it grows in that State. TRADAC might also be able to put you in touch with someone if you phone (07) 3852 1344.

Hi Doug! You were asking how to find the board footage in a given tree. I think what you are looking for is "Hoppus Meaurement". This is a method used to measure round logs, also known as the "quarter girth system". The formula is (¼ girth)² in inches x length in feet ÷ 12 = measurement in superficial ('super') feet. This formula allows about 27% for waste in conversion.

Sincerely,
PETER LLEWELLYN
