Usually it is better to use water extinguisher as against dry powder or co2 when fighting fire as a result of such solid fuel as wood.For wood fires the best technique is to remove the HEAT.Water has a high capacity to absolve heat.

Hi Michael. A deep beam in the field of timber design is simply a beam that is relatively deep relative to its thickness. I'm not familiar with the term "drop edge beam", or does this refer to a beam of light? I can only suggest you go back to the person who set the assignment and ask for help!

The advice you have had is correct. If you are going to use wet decking, install it so the boards are just lightly touching. They will create their own gaps of the desired 4-5mm as they shrink.

Hi Brock. It's difficult to be precise about it, but I think you would need to allow about a year in total (ie. another 9 months). The higher the density of the wood, the longer it takes to dry. A rough guide is that timber with a density greater than 650 kg/m³ will take 6 months per 25 mm thickness.

Hello Belinda. We understand that rimu can still be logged in New Zealand, but only on privately owned land, and only with a sustainable forest management plan and a permit from the Indigenous Forestry Unit (IFU). The volume of rimu coming to Australia is likely to be extremely small, or non-existent. Your best bet is to contact a timber recycling company, or choose a similar looking wood.

The website at www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/gopherwood.html advises that "gopher" is a Hebrew word and although there is no wood with that name today, a possible equivalent is cypress.

Hi Angela. Radiata pine is completely renewable, meaning that after we harvest it, we plant more, so the forest is "renewed". Radiata pine is a softwood, native to California and Mexico, but it has been planted extensively in Australia, New Zealand, Chile and South Africa. It is used for a wide range of products, including house framing, furniture and (when preservative treated) outdoor structures such as patio decks and fences. You will find more info about radiata pine on the Timber Development Association of NSW website at www.timber.net.au. Click on the Species Guide tab, select radiata pine, and you will find data about the timber and a photo of a forest. Also have a look at our Fact Sheets. Hello Janna. We don't actually grow plywood, we make it by gluing together thin sheets of wood called veneers. Veneers are peeled or sliced from all sorts of different trees, some of which grow quickly and some of which grow slowly. Hello Dicky Lo. The main concern about chipboard, plywood and medium density fibreboard (MDF) seems to be the formaldehyde content of the adhesive used in manufacture. The formaldehyde issue has been somewhat exaggerated in our view. The Worksafe Australia Exposure Standard for formaldehyde is 1 part per million (over an 8 hour day, for a five day working week, over an entire working lifetime). Alternatively, for short-term exposure the limit is 2 parts per million. Tests on newly-manufactured plywood show that phenol formaldehyde bonded plywood has emission levels of 0.03 to 0.04 ppm, and urea formaldehyde bonded plywood has emissions of 0.04 to 0.08 ppm. In the worst case, these levels are less than one-tenth the recommended long-term exposure limit, and the levels fall as the adhesive ages. There is therefore no health risk from the formaldehyde in plywood! The Australian Standards that govern the manufacture of particleboard (chipboard) and MDF also require a low formaldehyde content, approximately equivalent to the European E1 (lowest) level.
